SmartAngle User Guide

Safety
Children love small cute objects and SmartAngle is cute! It is unlikely that SmartAngle will be swallowed by a child but it is advisable to keep it away from young children.
SmartAngle contains a small Lithium Polymer (Li Po) battery which should be charged using a USB cable. It should never be necessary to open the unit.
Charge before first use
Use a standard USB to USB C data cable to connect SmartAngle to a PC USB port or to a USB charger and leave until the charging LED changes from red to green.
Note: SmartAngle uses USB C sockets to conform to EU regulations for charging cables.
SmartAngle requires charging:
- if the red LED flashes slowly for 30 seconds when the button is first pressed.
- if the LEDs do not flash (or flash very dimly) when the button is first pressed
Calibration
Each SmartAngle is calibrated during production but you may wish do it yourself before first use.
The quickest method is to use a spirit level if you have one. See "Setting true zero: method 1" below.
Operation
SmartAngle is controlled by a single button in the centre.
Pressing the button will generate a "beep" and you can count the beeps to determine what to do.
- 1 beep: on/off.
- 2 beeps: audible feedback on/off. Note: it is off by default each time SmartAngle is turned on.
- 3 beeps: set temporary zero (see below).
- 4 beeps: transfer temporary zero to true zero.
- 5 beeps: start 180 degree rotation zeroing (see below).
Note: SmartAngle will turn off automatically after 30 seconds if the reading does not change.
SmartAngle in use
Audible feedback - beeps
When you enable audible feedback SmartAngle will beep at an increasing rate until the green LED indicates level.
Visual feedback
- The green LED lights up when the surface is level ("If it's green, it's level!")
- The left yellow LED flashes if the left side of the surface must be raised to make it level.
- The right yellow LED flashes up if the right side of the surface must be raised to make it level.
Note: the yellow LEDs will flash at an increasing rate until the green LED comes on to indicate level.
Zeroing
"Zero" means the angle at which SmartAngle shows green and can be one of two types:
- True zero: a true horizontal or vertical level.
This is stored in SmartAngle's memory and used after the button is pressed to turn it on.
- Temporary zero: the angle at which SmartAngle is placed when you press the button for 3 beeps.
Once set, this remains the zero for showing the green LED until SmartAngle is turned off and on again.
Setting temporary zero
- Place SmartAngle on or against the surface whose angle you want to copy.
- Press the button for 3 beeps.
The two yellow LEDs will flash for 3 seconds to allow you to move your hand away.
- The two yellow LEDs will remain on for a few seconds then the green LED will come on to show that the current zero now matches the surface you used.
- This will be cancelled the next time SmartAngle is turned off and on using the "P" button.
Setting true zero: method 1
This is the quickest way to set true zero if you have a spirit level available:
- Ensure the spirit level is level.
- Place SmartAngle on top of the spirit level.
- Press the button for 3 beeps.
The two yellow LEDs will flash for 3 seconds to allow you to move your hand away.
- The two yellow LEDs will remain on for a few seconds then the green LED will come on to show that the current zero now matches the level indicated by the spirit level.
- Pick up SmartAngle, press the button and wait for 4 beeps.
The current zero is now stored as the true zero in SmartAngle's memory.
Setting true zero: method 2
- Place SmartAngle on a surface which is approximately horizontal.
- Hold SmartAngle against a straight edge - anything flat that won't move - like a ruler.
- Press the button for 5 beeps.
- The two yellow LEDs will flash for 3 seconds to allow you to move your hand away then they will both stay on.
- Now, within 10 seconds while the yellow LEDs remain on:
- Rotate SmartAngle 180 degrees against the edge being used.
- Press then release the button and let go of SmartAngle so it can take an accurate reading.
- The two yellow LEDs will flash for 3 seconds to allow you to move your hand away.
- The green LED will come on to show that true zero has been set.
